MUFASA: THE LION KING GETS FIRST TRAILER FROM DISNEY

Mufasa's story will be explored in the upcoming movie Mufasa: The Lion King. A prequel to Disney's Lion King remake, the film is coming to theaters on Dec. 20.

While the film is a prequel, it's told in flashbacks by Rafiki, allowing for some familiar Lion King characters to also appear. The story picks up with Mufasa as an orphaned cub whose chance encounter with a royal lion changes his life forever. The trailer can be watched below.

The official synopsis for the movie reads, "Mufasa: The Lion King enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka — the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny — their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe."

The film features a blend of new and returning cast members. Notably, it introduces Beyoncé Knowles-Carter's daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, as Kiara, the daughter of King Simba (Donald Glover) and Nala (Beyoncé). Mads Mikkelsen also voices Kiros, described as a "formidable lion with big plans for his pride," while Kelvin Harrison Jr. voices Taka, a lion prince "with a brithg future who accepts Mufasa into his family as a brother."

The cast also includes Aaron Pierre (Mufasa), Tiffany Boone (Sarabi), Kagiso Lediga (Young Rafiki), Preston Nyman (Zazu), Thandiwe Newton (Eshe, Taka's mother), Lennie James (Obasi, Taka's father), Anika Noni Rose (Afia, Mufasa's mother), Keith David (Masego, Mufasa's father), John Kani (Rafiki), Seth Rogen (Pumbaa), and Billy Eichner (Timon). Additional cast members in undisclosed roles include Braelyn Rankins, Theo Somolu, Folake Olowofoyeku, Joanna Jones, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, Abdul Salis, and Dominique Jennings.

Lin-Manuel Miranda Writes the Movie's Songs

The film is directed by Barry Jenkins. It is produced by Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak, and executive produced by Peter Tobyansen. Lin-Manuel Miranda is writing the film's songs produced by Miranda and Mark Mancina, with additional music and performances by Lebo M.

Beau Black, Ford Riley, the incredible music team on The Lion Guard, and so many musical contributors over the years. It’s been a joy working alongside Barry Jenkins to bring Mufasa’s story to life, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience this film in theaters."
