Nintendo Switch Online has added four new games, one of which is Battletoads/Double Dragon, to its SNES games catalog. Nintendo Switch Online has done a stellar job of providing more value to members of the subscription service. While its main purpose may be to give subscribers an additional subset of games to play for free, it has also become an avenue for players to experience titles not previously available in the western market.
As an example, three formerly Japan-exclusive Game Boy Advance Starfy games made their way to the service in early 2024. The prospect of adding titles not released in western countries has many gamers excited about the future. With the already huge library of games from different consoles, Nintendo's Switch Online service continues to impress.
With Nintendo releasing three Japan-exclusive GBA games worldwide via Switch Online, one infamous game may finally have a shot at a Western release.
The prospect of adding titles not released in western countries has many gamers excited about the future.
In a video uploaded on Nintendo's YouTube channel, Nintendo Switch Online announced the new additions to its SNES gaming library: Battletoads/Double Dragon, Kunio-Kun no Dodgeball da yo Zenâin ShÅ«gÅ!, Big Run, and Cosmo Gang The Puzzle. The last two games mentioned were also added to the Japanese Super Famicom catalog, along with Angelique. The most famous game of the bunch may be Battletoads/Double Dragon, which features characters from both franchises. Battletoads itself is famous because of its difficulty, but the Double Dragon crossover may be more forgiving to casual players.
Meanwhile, the Kunio-Kun series may be familiar to classic gamers, as many consider it to be where the Double Dragon franchise gets its roots. However, the title being added is a dodgeball-based sports game that was released way back in 1993 in Japan. As with previously added Japan-exclusive titles, Nintendo Switch Online looks to have ported the game as is, so fans may be disappointed in the non-English text included. However, with how easy to pick up and play many of these Kunio titles are, it might not be a problem for interested players.
It's quite amazing that Nintendo continues to add classic titles for modern players to experience. And although fans are still hoping that Nintendo DS titles can be added to Switch Online in the future, there's still a lot of unexplored territory when it comes to Japan-exclusive games from the NES, Game Boy Advance, and the Super Nintendo. Interestingly enough, some fans believe that games being added to the service have a possibility of receiving new games in the future, such as the rumored next-gen Starfy title. True or not, some gamers feel that a Battletoads, Double Dragon, or a new Kunio-Kun title would be interesting to have.
