One of the most iconic shoujo manga series of all time, The Rose of Versailles, is finally returning with a movie in celebration of the franchise's 50th anniversary, produced by none other than MAPPA. Two years after announcing the movie, The Rose of Versailles has finally returned with a brand new promotional video, a new key visual, information on the production staff and cast, and a release date to look forward to.

Based on the manga by Riyoko Ikeda, The Rose of Versailles recently announced that a movie adaptation produced by MAPPA is set to release in Spring 2025. The announcement was made via the web domain created for the movie and was accompanied by a short teaser trailer posted on the series' official YouTube channel.

The movie will be directed by Ai Yoshimura, best known for directing popular series like Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day and Blue Spring Ride. Meanwhile, the music for the movie will be produced by Hiroyuki Sawano, who has become quite a household name since working on Attack on Titan, and more recently, Solo Leveling.

The Rose of Versailles Will Return With a Movie in 2025

Production by MAPPA Ensures the Movie Will Be A Visual Treat

Hailed as a timeless masterpiece by Riyoko Ikeda, The Rose of Versailles originally announced a movie was in the works back in 2022, but little else was heard about the project until very recently. The series is a seminal work in the shoujo genre and while it has been decades since the series has graced screens, the series still no doubt has a dedicated fan base around the world that has been eagerly awaiting its return.

Fortunately, seeing as the project has been taken on by MAPPA, the movie surely will not disappoint in terms of animation quality or visuals. The trailer and key visuals already provide a good glimpse into what to expect from the movie, which looks very promising thus far. The screenplay for the same has been written by Tomoko Konparu who has most notably worked on Nana and Urusei Yatsura.

Meanwhile, Mariko Oka, who has worked as a key animator on several big shojo anime like Yuri on Ice, Banana Fish, and xxxHolic is responsible for bringing The Rose of Versailles' iconic character designs to life. The main voice cast for the movie has also been revealed with Aya Hirano voicing Marie Antoinette, Sawashiro Miyuki as the voice of Oscar Francois de Jarjayes, Toshiyuki Toyonoga as Andre Grandier, and Kazuki Kato as Hans Axel von Fersen.
