SAN ANTONIO RESTAURANT GETS SECOND VISIT FROM GUY FIERI FOR DINERS, DRIVE-INS AND DIVES SPIN-OFF

It seems like Guy Fieri can’t get enough of one San Antonio restaurant’s fare.

Fat Tummy Empanadas, an Alamo City-based eatery founded by husband and wife team Chef Gustavo Plache and Norah Saleh, received another nod from the “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” universe for a Food Network spin-off series: “Triple D Nation.”

The local eatery was first featured on Fieri’s series in 2018, highlighted for serving up Argentinian-style staples like savory and sweet empanadas, choripan sandwiches and chimichurri sauce.

Now, in 2024, the restaurant nabbed the spotlight once more during a return visit from Fieri for season 6, episode 4 of his Triple D Nation spin-off series. The episode, dubbed “Triple D Nation: All Dough’ed Up,” aired Friday night on the Food Network at 8 p.m.

It featured Fieri sampling the restaurant’s choripan sandwich, as well as its alfajores — a sweet treat made with two shortbread cookies sandwiched together with dulce de leche.

“A San Antonio spot is serving up a taste of Argentina with their chorizo and chimichurri sandwich, plus a decadent dulce de leche-coconut cookie combo,” the Food Network wrote of Fat Tummy Empanadas in its episode description.

Fieri himself seemed to give the restaurant his top marks.

“You’re the example of the America story,” he said. “That’s why we do Triple-D.”

Patrons can visit Fat Tummy Empanadas at 2922 W. Commerce St., Tuesday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
