Welcome to Derry takes place in the same universe as Stephen King’s iconic 1986 novel It, which centers around a shape-shifting clown-like monster called Pennywise as he preys upon the fears of the titular town’s children. The project is written and executive produced by Jason Fuchs, who is also set as the showrunner, along with Brad Caleb Kane. It films director Andy Muschietti and producer Barbara Muschietti are also involved in the spinoff series as executive producers through Double Dream production banner. It is a production by Warner Bros. Television, with Andy Muschietti also directing multiple episodes of the horror drama, along with Shōgun’s Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour.

According to its official logline, the prequel intends to expand the lore of King’s novel and the Muschiettis’ billion-dollar film franchise. The story will reportedly be set in the 1960s, two decades before the events of the first movie. In a previous interview, Osei-Kuffour teased the show’s "very character-driven" story, promising that the "audiences will be as scared as they are in the original movies." The ten new cast members will be joining previously announced leads Jovan Adepo (The Leftovers, Watchmen), Chris Chalk (Gotham), Taylour Paige (Zola), James Rema (Black Lightning), and Stephen Rider (Daredevil).
