SAILOR MOON: THE WORST THINGS USAGI EVER DID

Sailor Moon's Usagi Tsukino has become a fan favorite anime character thanks to her kindhearted nature as she protects the world in the name of the moon. While Usagi is generally depicted as a strong but gentle warrior for peace, she's also often seen engaging in some questionable and flawed behavior that highlights her imperfections.

Sometimes Usagi's imperfections make her an even more relatable character, which is one of the reasons she's remained one of the most iconic '90s anime characters, even if many of her actions don't set the best example for younger viewers. From skipping school and getting into petty fights, some of Usagi's worst actions ended up having serious consequences for not only her but the rest of the Sailor Guardians, too.

There are plenty of shojo tropes in romance anime, and while some may feel a bit overused, others, like tsundere love interests, may never get old.

Usagi Often Ignored Friends and Abandoned Her Duties

When transformed into Sailor Moon, Usagi became an amazing fighter, but she often found it difficult to remain focused on her duties long enough to protect even those closest to her. One example of this is early in the Sailor Moon series, when Usagi's friends and classmates are struggling and falling victim to Nephrite.

Usagi was too preoccupied with her own life to be able to focus on her friends, and things got so bad that Luna had to threaten her just to get her attention back on track. While Sailor Moon is undoubtedly a heroine, it's a shame that she often puts her own wants and desires above her duties as a Sailor Guardian.

Usagi Slapped Mamoru for Forgetting Her Birthday

10 Fairy Tale References in Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon draws heavily from Greek and Roman mythology, but the franchise has many different influences threaded through the amazing series.

Usagi's relationship with Mamoru is central to Sailor Moon's story, but there are plenty of occasions when she's not the ideal partner. One of the times Usagi treated Mamoru the worst was when she got angry with him and even slapped him for forgetting her birthday.

In the episode, Usagi was seen crying and making a big fuss over Mamoru not honoring her birthday in the way she expected, but then later realized she never even told him what day her birthday was in the first place. As comedic as the situation may have seemed, Usagi's actions were selfish and over the top — especially considering she later realized Mamoru did nothing wrong.

Usagi is Often Rude to Luna

As one of Sailor Moon's many fan-favorite characters, Luna was Usagi's talking cat and mentor who guided her throughout her journey as a Sailor Guardian, but Usagi rarely showed her the respect she deserved. Luna disliked Usagi's immaturity and often pushed her to do better, but that never seemed to motivate Usagi to be a better version of herself.

In fact, there are many instances throughout the series when Usagi was dismissive and flat-out rude to Luna. Considering how much knowledge and guidance Luna offered to Usagi, the young Sailor Guardian should have been more patient and loving to her devoted mentor.

Usagi Treated Chibiusa Terribly

Sailor Moon's daughter Chibiusa played an important role in the series, but the young girl unfortunately had to deal with terrible mistreatment from her own mother at every turn. Usagi often seemed to be terribly jealous of Chibiusa's relationship with her father, at times going so far as to assume that Mamoru would try to replace her with Chibiusa.

In one instance, Mamoru helped Chibiusa with her homework, prompting Usagi to meanly tell her "Even if you're smart, you won't find anyone to marry anyway." It's safe to say Usagi's jealousy and protectiveness over Mamoru often took precedence over her instincts as a mother.

Usagi Often Skipped School and Failed Tests

From the very first episode, Sailor Moon made it clear that its shojo protagonist was good at many things — but being the perfect student was not one of them. Usagi was often seen heading to school late and failing her tests, leaving her academic career in shambles.

While struggling with her studies was a part of Usagi's character that many young fans could likely relate to, Usagi set a bad example by how quickly she brushed off academia to become a Sailor Guardian. While it's true she excelled at saving the world, it would've been nice to see her manage her time more skillfully, allowing her to better balance her crime-fighting prowess with her studies to get better grades.

Usagi's Underage Drinking Sets a Bad Example

In Sailor Moon, Usagi is just 14 years old at the beginning of the series. By the end of the story, she's still only 16 — which makes the two occurrences when she got terribly intoxicated even more unforgivable than if she were an adult.

Some of Sailor Moon's dubs even seem to acknowledge the problematic nature of a teenager who is meant to be a role model getting visibly drunk and losing control of her actions. In certain dubs, the two episodes where Usagi drinks too much have both been changed slightly, with her drunkenness being changed to her "feeling ill" in one episode. In the other episode, a dub changes her drink from alcohol to "juice," which makes her sick instead.

Usagi's Offhanded Homophobia Aged Poorly

There are many ways that the Sailor Moon anime has gotten even better with age, but there are times throughout the series when the script utilizes homophobia for its comedic efforts. In one instance, Usagi receives a love letter from a female classmate and mistakes it as being for her. She tells the young girl it would be "better" to give her love letter to a boy instead.

While Haruka and Michiru's same-sex relationship was pretty groundbreaking for being inclusive, their love life was often the target of homophobic humor as well. Despite these missteps, Sailor Moon still remains a wonderful example of nuanced queer representation in '90s anime.

Usagi Had Severe Body Image Issues

Zodiac signs can say a lot about someone's personality, even for everyone's favorite Sailor Moon characters!

Despite her petite and slim appearance, Usagi often struggled with body image issues throughout Sailor Moon's story. While this is normal and relatable, the show often took things to the extreme, and Usagi was often obsessed with her insecurities in a way that would be dangerous for fans to replicate.

Usagi's eating habits appeared to be anything but ordinary, especially in the aptly titled episode "Learn How to Be Skinny from Usagi." The episode sees Usagi stressed about gaining weight from overeating, so she joins a gym that promises "instant results" for weight loss. The worst part? The weight gain that sent her into a downward spiral was only 0.5 pounds.

Usagi Almost Killed An Innocent Person as Sailor Moon

10 Biggest Differences Between Sailor Moon Crystal & The Original Anime

Sailor Moon Crystal focuses on the source material and does away with filler episodes and arcs making for a more manga loyal adaptation experience.

Sailor Moon remains one of the most influential anime series, but there was a time when its protagonist almost killed an innocent person. In the episode "Sailor Venus' Past: Minako's Tragic Love," Usagi's rage drives her to do the unthinkable, and she attempts to kill Katerina, the friend of Sailor Venus.

Usagi's anger stemmed from believing that Katerina "stole" Sailor Vensus' love interest, which prompted Usagi to transform into Sailor Moon and scream "I won't let you get away with trying to break the heart of a young girl in love!" What Usagi didn't realize was that Katerina was actually innocent and transformed by the evil Kunzite, making this lapse in her judgment even more terrible.

Sailor Moon Gave the Holy Grail to Mistress 9

Perhaps the worst miscalculation Usagi ever made throughout Sailor Moon was when she gave the Holy Grail to Mistress 9. She essentially sacrificed the entire world in an effort to save Hotaru's life.

While it's true that Mistress 9 was one of Sailor Moon's most cunning villains, Usagi should have seen the trap and not fallen for the bait, and even Sailor Uranus and Neptune tried to warn Usagi against giving up the Holy Grail. She remained stubborn and refused to listen, and there were serious consequences as a result.

After giving up the Holy Grail, Mistress 9's power grew, and she summoned Pharaoh 90 — an entity of pure evil. While Usagi's motivations were pure of heart, her desire not to sacrifice Hotaru ultimately came at a much higher price than she ever could have imagined, making this one of her worst decisions in the entire franchise.
