Max's It Prequel Series With Bill Skarsgard Gets Surprising Update

The It prequel series that's been in development at Max has gotten some big news ahead of its debut in 2025.

This is not the first feature film based on the O'Barr comic book, as it comes three decades after the release of the Brandon Lee-led adaptation directed by Alex Proyas. Director Rupert Sanders will be introducing some differences with the adaptation, however, with Eric's look as one particular example. Skarsgård's Eric looks very different from other incarnations of the character, and Sanders has said how this was to make the story more modern. With Eric's new look influenced by today's popular rap stars, Sanders said the goal was for young adult viewers to relate better to the character.

Post Malone and Lil Peep Influenced Eric's Look in The Crow

"I think the beauty of Bill is that he has a disturbing beauty, and as he transforms through his loss he becomes this thing that even he can’t control," Sanders told Vanity Fair. "That look was me in the ’90s when we were squat-raving in London, [mixed with some modern influences] like Post Malone and Lil Peep. I hope people who are 19 today look at him and go, ‘That guy is us.’"

'Seriously? The Clown?': Bill Skargard's Boy Kills World Casting Surprised Co-Star

Exclusive: Boy Kills World actor Sharlto Copley admits to questioning the casting of Pennywise actor Bill Skarsgard as a brutal action hero.

On reimagining The Crow three decades after Lee's tragic passing on the set of the previous feature film, Sanders added, “Brandon was an original voice and I think he will always be synonymous with The Crow and I hope he’s proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve brought the story back again. His soul is very much alive in this film. There’s a real fragility and beauty to his version of the Crow, and I think Bill feels like he is a successor to that.”

Directed by Sanders, the new take on The Crow is written by Zach Baylin and William Schneider. FKA Twigs also stars as Shelly, Eric's lover who's killed alongside him. The film also stars Danny Huston, Isabella Wei, Laura Birn, and Sami Bouajila. It's produced by Edward R. Pressman, Molly Hassell, Victor Hadida, John Jencks, and Samuel Hadida.

The Crow, which is rated R, will be released in theaters on Aug. 23, 2024.
