DUNE DIRECTOR'S ACCLAIMED 2015 ACTION MOVIE LANDS NEW STREAMING HOME

Hulu subscribers are now able to stream one of director Denis Villeneuve's most acclaimed action movies. Sicario, starring Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin, has recently been added to the streaming service.

Written by Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, Sicario is an action thriller that follows a principled FBI special agent (Blunt) who is enlisted by a government task force to bring down the leader of a powerful and brutal Mexican drug cartel. The movie received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics, holding a 92 percent score on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes. Sicario was also an awards darling, receiving multiple nominations at the Academy Awards and BAFTAs. In addition to its critical acclaim, Sicario was a modest box-office success, grossing $85 million worldwide on a $30 million budget.

Hugh Jackman's Best Role Was in This 2013 Denis Villeneuve Thriller

Deadpool & Wolverine star Hugh Jackman may be best known for his claws, but this 2013 hit thriller from the director of Dune is his best performance.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado, a sequel without the involvement of Villeneuve or Blunt, was released in 2018. Del Toro and Brolin reprised their respective roles from the first movie as CIA-trained assassin Alejandro Gillick and CIA SAC/SOG officer Matt Graver, with Isabela Moner joining the cast as the daughter of a powerful Mexican drug lord. Sheridan returned to write the screenplay. Although not as big of a hit as Sicario, Day of the Soldado was still successful, earning favorable reviews from critics and grossing $75.8 million at the global box office.

Sicario 3 Remains in Development

Another installment in the Sicario franchise has been in development since 2018. The latest update on the threequel came in October 2023, when producers Molly Smith and Trent Luckinbill revealed that Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie was involved in an unknown capacity, although Smith hinted that the filmmaker could end up directing Sicario 3.

"We don't know who's going to direct yet," Smith said. "It's all gonna be about timing. We've got obviously a wealth of great partners on it, everybody from Taylor Sheridan to Chris McQuarrie as a partner on it, but it'll all be about the timing and what aligns with everyone's schedule."

Denis Villeneuve Reveals Disappointment Over Dune: Part Two Leading 2024 Box Office

Dune: Part Two filmmaker Denis Villeneuve also shares why he thinks the acclaimed sci-fi sequel succeeded at the global box office.

What's Next for Denis Villeneuve?

Villeneuve has directed four movies since Sicario was released in 2015: Arrival (2016), Blade Runner 2049 (2017), Dune (2021), and Dune: Part Two (2024). Up next for the acclaimed filmmaker is a third Dune movie based on Frank Herbert's Dune: Messiah novel. Development on the threequel began in 2024, although filming will not commence until Villeneuve believes they have a "strong screenplay," explaining, "The thing I want to avoid is not having something ready. I never did it, and now I feel it could be dangerous because of the enthusiasm. We need to make sure all the ideas are on paper."

Dune screenwriter Eric Roth shared in November 2023 that he had just finished writing a film for Villeneuve. While he didn't disclose the name of the movie, fans have heavily speculated that he was referring to the 1973 sci-fi novel Rendezvous with Rama, which Villeneuve mentioned in March 2022 as being a contender for one of his next projects. The acclaimed director previously described Rendezvous with Rama as "Arrival on steroids." At this time, it is unknown which project will be Villeneuve's next movie, which Warner Bros. has dated for theatrical release on Dec. 18, 2026.

Sicario is currently streaming on Hulu.
