After its astounding box office success, Inside Out 2 has dethroned The Lion King as one of the biggest movies worldwide.
Deadline reports that Pixar's Inside Out 2 has earned a total of $1.666 billion worldwide. The film earned an estimated $1,666.2 million this weekend alone. With this new milestone, the sequel has overtaken the 2019 The Lion King live-action remake as the ninth highest-grossing film of all time. This summer has proven to be an incredibly successful one for Disney given the simultaneous massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine.
EXCLUSIVE: A clip from the bonus features of Inside Out 2 takes a closer look at the origins of Ayo Edebiri's Envy.
Inside Out 2 is a sequel following the life of a newly teenage Riley and her five emotions: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. The new film introduces brand new emotions, including Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui.
Overthrowing The Lion King isn't where Inside Out 2's success ends. This is just one of many records the film has broken, including overtaking Frozen 2 as the highest-grossing animated film. The film's domestic success alone is nothing to overlook. Having grossed $600 million in the United States alone, the film has cemented itself as one of Disney's biggest.
While a third Inside Out film hasn't been formally confirmed, many of the film's cast members have speculated about what a third film would be about. Additionally, the franchise is set to receive a Disney+ in the near future.
Inside Out 2 can be streamed on digital VOD at Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Fandango.
