SHREK 5 AND DONKEY SPINOFF GET AN EXCITING UPDATE FROM EDDIE MURPHY

DreamWorks Animation is returning to the swamp. Eddie Murphy recently confirmed that both a Shrek 5 and a Donkey spinoff are in production.

The actor shared the exciting news during an exclusive interview with CBR's Kevin Polowy to promote Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. "Yeah, we started doing Shrek. We started doing Shrek about four to six months ago. I recorded the whole first act already," Murphy said. "And we're doing, after the Shrek [sequel], we're doing a Donkey movie. Just Donkey. Donkey's got his own movie. Donkey got his own movie! I'll be in full Donkey mode in about a year."

Kung Fu Panda 4 Gets Streaming Premiere Date

Peacock announces when the latest installment in DreamWorks Animation's Kung Fu Panda series will be available to stream on its service.

The Shrek franchise began in 2001 with the release of the eponymous animated film, starring Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, and Murphy as Donkey. The trio returned for the 2004 sequel, Shrek 2, which added Puss in Boots to the cast, with Antonio Banderas voicing the swashbuckling feline. Two more sequels — 2007's Shrek the Third and 2010's Shrek Forever After — centered around the titular ogre followed before the franchise shifted focus to Puss in Boots, with the character receiving his first spinoff movie in 2011. This was followed by the animated television series, The Adventures of Puss in Boots, which aired between 2015 and 2018, and another film, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which was released in 2022.

When Is Shrek 5 Coming Out?

While DreamWorks has yet to officially announce a release date for Shrek 5, Murphy let slip during a recent interview with Collider that the animated sequel would hit theaters next year. "I think it's coming out in 2025, and we're doing a Donkey one next," the actor shared. The actor's comment lines up with a previous report from November 2023 that stated that Shrek 5 would be released in 2025.

Shrek 5 was first teased in April 2023 by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri, who is a creative partner at DreamWorks Animation. While plot details remain under wraps, the sequel is expected to pick up after the events of The Last Wish, which ended with the titular feline returning to the Kingdom of Far Far Away to visit "some old friends."

Puss in Boots 2 Star Wants to Return for Shrek 5

Murphy is so far the first and only actor officially attached to Shrek 5. While no other actors have teased their return, Harvey Guillén, who voiced the fan-favorite character Perrito in The Last Wish, has expressed interest in coming back for Shrek 5. "Oh, absolutely. 100%," he said in February 2024. "I mean, I think we want to hear, I want to hear Perrito's origin story. When did that whole thing happen with the sock? I want to know a little bit of a backstory there and what happened, and how he got that scar on his tummy. I still don't know how he got that. If you look at the poster he's lifting up his sweater, he has a little scar on his tummy, and I was like, how did you get that?"

Shrek is available to stream on Netflix, while the rest of the franchise's animated films are available on Peacock.
