STEPHEN KING DEFENDS KEVIN COSTNER'S NEW WESTERN AFTER ROUGH OPENING

Kevin Costner bet on himself by putting in much of his own fortune to fund his new Western movie series. The first installment, Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1, didn't have the best start in theaters, however.

Following its debut in theaters, Horizon has made just over $12 million at the box office, which isn't a great return, given the high budget. The response from critics was also not stellar, as the film is currently sitting on a score of 42% --- though its audience score is notably higher at 72%. Horror mastermind and movie lover Stephen King noticed that there are some people on social media taking delight in Horizon having a rough start, and that prompted the author to respond with a post on X. For his part, King believes filmgoers should be more supportive of original movies.

Stephen King Approves 'Big Hollywood' Horror Film

Stephen King says a new horror film does something most other "big Hollywood" movies cannot.

King stated, "Schadenfreude is 'taking pleasure in another’s misfortune.' It perfectly describes many reactions I’ve read to Costner's HORIZON. Why in God’s name would anyone luxuriate in the failure of a film that isn’t a sequel or part of the, God save us, 'Marvel universe?'

Michael Rooker Has Also Defended the Film

Michael Rooker, one of the movie's actors, has also recently defended the film. He said that Horizon is what can be called "real cinema," telling a story that's much more meaningful than what most audiences are used to. While it's a long movie, clocking in at over three hours, Rooker says people need to "get over" the run time and buckle in, suggesting they'll like the film if they give it a chance.

Let's watch a movie that actually tells a story, where you learn, you learn about the people, you grow to like them or hate them. It's not all fast, cut, cut, cut."

Costner directed Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1, which is written by Baird and Costner with Mark Kasdan contributing to the story. The film also stars Costner, Rooker, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, and Giovanni Ribisi.
