Netflix Releases Studio Ghibli's The Boy and the Heron for Streaming This October

Netflix's acquisition was first announced in March, following a major deal that saw 22 additional Studio Ghibli films also head to the platform globally. This again excludes the U.S. and Japan, with HBO's popular Max platform securing the rights for those countries. Both platforms sport an exciting collection that includes fan favorites like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle and many more.

The Boy and the Heron Is Studio Ghibli's Most Financially Successful Film in North America

Netflix's acquisition also means more eyes on the seismic Studio Ghibli title. The film marked Miyazaki's first Oscar since his win for Spirited Away in 2013. It's also the first primarily non-American production to win a Golden Globe, Studio Ghibli's biggest box office haul in over 20 years, and according to the surprise Max special documenting Miyazaki, a film where he was "pushed ever further into his creativity, ultimately delivering an unprecedented masterpiece." Fans can check out the documentary and film on Max or wait until Oct. 7 for Netflix's release. The streamer describes the film: "When Mahito moves to the countryside where his mother's family stays, he's lured into a mysterious world where life and death are intertwined by a gray heron."
