LONG-AWAITED METAL GEAR SOLID MOVIE FINALLY GETS PROMISING UPDATE

  • Metal Gear Solid live-action adaptation still in development.
  • Script being rewritten by Derek Connolly, aiming for a "terrific" adaptation, though Oscar Isaac potentially out.
  • Creator Hideo Kojima suggests Furiosa star Tom Burke for the role of Solid Snake.

The long-gestating live-action adaptation of Metal Gear Solid gets a hugely exciting update from producer Avi Arad, who confirms that the project is still in development. An adaptation of the franchise has been in development since as far back as 2006, and while we have not heard much about the movie since director Jordan Vogt-Roberts came aboard to helm with Oscar Isaac to star, Arad assured Game that the script is being worked on as we speak...

We're working on the script some more, but I can't talk about it yet. I think everyone's going to be really excited and surprised.

According to the report, Isaac, who is best known for his role in the Star Wars saga as well as Dune and Moon Knight, has now dropped out, while the script is currently undergoing rewrites courtesy of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Kong: Skull Island writer Derek Connolly.

Continuing, Arad commented on Metal Gear Solid being the "pinnacle” of video game adaptations, and assured fans that he is striving to make it “terrific.”

I never thought about it like that. These are just movies I want to make as good as possible, you know? I think getting Metal Gear right will obviously be amazing because I think it's a lot more meditative than some of the other adaptations. Personally, I want it to be terrific.

Metal Gear Creator Hideo Kojima Knows Who He Wants to Play Live-Action Solid Snake

Metal Gear Solid: Why a Movie May Ultimately Be Redundant

Metal Gear Solid was groundbreaking for its cinematic approach to storytelling. Would a feature film be redundant in comparison?

While Oscar Isaac may now be out as lead character Solid Snake, creator Hideo Kojima knows who he would like to see sport the bandana in his place: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga star Tom Burke. Kojima took to social media recently to comment on the casting idea, saying...

Jack (Tsuda Kenjiro), Furiosa's mentor, is played by Tom Burke. To me, he looked just like Snake. Apparently, when I met him at a party and listened to him, everyone told me on the first day of filming that he sounded like Snake.

Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, meanwhile, has been signed on to helm the Metal Gear Solid movie since 2014, and hopes to see the project realized with an R-rating and with hopes to make a “riskier, balls-to-the-wall, Kojima-san version of it,” he said to Collider back in 2018. After waiting almost two decades for the Metal Gear Solid movie to emerge, here's hoping the adaptation comes together sooner rather than later.
