  • The series reimagines Sherlock Holmes at 19 years old, depicting him as "disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed."
  • Princess Gulun Shou'an's involvement in the plot will likely be multifaceted, potentially bringing cultural richness and diversity to the series.

Guy Ritchie's Young Sherlock series casts a female lead and reveals a character description. Ritchie previously directed the 2009 Sherlock Holmes movie starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, which was followed by the 2011 sequel, with Sherlock Holmes 3 currently in development. In May 2024, it was announced that Prime Video was developing a Young Sherlock series with Ritchie directing, which tells an origin story for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective and stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin in the titular role alongside Joseph Fiennes and Natascha McElhone as Sherlock's parents.

Now, the series has cast a female lead and revealed a description of the character. According to Deadline, Young Sherlock has cast Zine Tseng as Princess Gulun Shou'an, described as a "Chinese Princess, Oxford University Scholar and skilled martial-artist." Tseng is best known for her breakout role in Netflix's 3 Body Problem as the younger version of Dr. Ye Wenjie.

What To Expect From Princess Gulun Shouan In Young Sherlock

The Character Was Created For The Series

Based on the Young Sherlock Holmes books by Andrew Lane, with Matthew Parkhill acting as showrunner, the upcoming series reimagines the iconic detective at 19 years of age, depicting him as "disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed." During this time, a young Sherlock Holmes becomes involved in a murder mystery at Oxford University that jeopardizes his freedom. Investigating his first case ever with reckless inexperience, Sherlock uncovers a global conspiracy that changes his life forever.

Princess Gulun Shou'an does not appear in any of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, nor the Young Sherlock Holmes series by Lane. However, Princess Shou'an is a real historical figure from the Qing dynasty. In turn, the possibilities are near endless for the character in the Young Sherlock TV show. Given that she's the female lead alongside Fiennes Tiffin's young Sherlock, the princess is poised to play a pivotal role in the series.
