ISABELA MERCED TEASES DCU DEBUT UPON ARRIVING ON SUPERMAN SET

Superman star and Hawkgirl actor Isabela Merced recently landed in Cleveland for the Man of Steel's newest cinematic outing. But that's not the only bit of news.

In a post on X from the DC Film News account, a photo which was taken from Merced's Instagram story sees Merced standing next to the Superman Welcoming Center and five Shaking Head emojis. Above the photo, text can be seen that reads, "Isabela Merced aka Hawkgirl has landed in Cleveland to join the SUPERMAN cast."

Prior to this, Superman writer-director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn revealed Hawkgirl's identity, avowing, "Today is the anniversary of Kendra Saunders' first appearance as [Hawkgirl]! While Kendra took flight in JSA SECRET FILES #1 in 1999 under writers James Robinson and David S. Goyer and artists Louis Small Jr. and Michael Bair, Hawkgirl first hit stands in 1940 as Shiera Saunders-Hall in FLASH COMICS #1 written by Gardner Fox and drawn by Dennis Neville." Gunn further noted that he was "[so] excited" for Merced to "don the wings in [Superman]!"

Additionally, Merced touched upon her screen test for the Last Son of Krypton's newest cinematic outing, conveying that Gunn is "so creative" and has "such a unique style, and whatever he touches, he always adds his own flair to it." She added, "I was directed by him during the [screen] test for this, because I auditioned for this. I got to do [the screen test] with my other castmates, and that was really cool. It felt very professional; it was almost like a legitimate shooting day. So I've already learned so much about his process, and this man has such a solid team." She concluded that Gunn has "the best of the best working for him," and joked that they've worked together for so long that "it's only up to [her] to mess it up."

Putting the spotlight on Superman itself, Gunn discussed why Hawkgirl and other DC heroes are in the project, affirming, "They fit the story I'm telling. Story always comes first." More recently, Gunn delved into leading man David Corenswet's Superman screen test with Lois Lane actor Rachel Brosnahan, remarking, "When they first read together it was like magic."

Superman Won't Be a Comedy Movie

Besides these, Gunn promised that Superman won't be a comedy, asserting that it's easier for one to "take a character nobody knows, like the Guardians [of the Galaxy], or Peacemaker, and then do whatever you want with them," but people in every single country in the world know the story of Superman.

Superman arrives in theaters faster than a speeding bullet on July 11, 2025.
